A ceremony was held by the Customs Administration to mark the start of construction of the fourth patrol boat on Nov. 12, 2021. It was presided over by Director Su Shwu-Jane of Kaohsiung Customs (KHC) and Executive Vice President Kao Chien-I of China Ship Building Corporation.
This new patrol boat has an overall length of 32 meters and a beam of 7 meters. The maximum speed can reach 30 knots due to its lightweight design: the aluminum superstructure and the steel hull are utilized to lighten the boat while maintaining the entire robust structure. In addition to high speed, the interceptor installed in the stern provides exceptional maneuverability conducive to more efficient Customs inspections on coastal waters.
Customs authorities in Taiwan have been committed to lawful trade facilitation, revenue collection, and border control. They intend to improve interception of smuggling attempts by replacing aging patrol boats. For instance, KHC has planned to replace two of its patrol boats, construction of one having started on June 18, 2021. After the deliveries in 2022 and 2023, these brand new patrol vessels are expected to remarkably enhance KHC's capabilities to carry out law enforcement actions within the maritime jurisdiction.
